We crossed another item off our Swiss bucket list last weekend when we visited the iconic Stoos funicular railway.
An incredible feat of engineering, the railway is the steepest in the world and the most stylish way to access the car-free village of Stoos (1,300 metres up).
We arrived early on Sunday morning and the car park was already quite full but we managed to find a space before collecting our tickets at the Schwyz-Stoos funicular railway ticket office. The funicular departs frequently so we didn’t have to wait long before setting off. The views from the windows are impressive and you really gets sense of just how steep the railway is. The children were surprised because they couldn’t really feel the vertical climb which lasts about 4-7 minutes and can transport up to 136 people per trip.
When you leave the funicular at the top, it feels like you are in another world with beautiful scenery all around. Stoos is the departure point for many hikes so you are sure to find one which suits your needs. We tried part of the Fronalp adventure trail and the view was just magnificent.
There is a hotel and restaurants in the village so you could easily spend a while exploring the area.  There is even a place to rent your sports equipment and lockers to leave your belongings while you are out and about.  Children are also well looked after with playgrounds, places for grilling, pushchair friendly paths, petting zoo and sledding slopes in the winter. Your children could also join the Fröneli club (free of charge) for family news and contests.
