Blausee natural park in Kandersteg (canton of Bern) has been on our Swiss bucket list for ages so we were really excited to be able to plan a trip around our recent visit to Interlaken.

It’s often difficult when you fall in love with a much-photographed beauty spot as it seldom lives up to the filtered photos you see on social media, but I have to say that Blausee didn’t let us down.

It’s well signposted and there is a large paid car park at the entrance. Tickets for this time of the year cost chf5 for adults, free for children under 6 and chf2 for children over 6. The pricing changes in peak times from mid-March to mid-November.

There are a few paths to take you to the lake via various routes and we decided to follow the blue trail through a nice wooded area which led on to the lake. There is a real “wow” moment as you approach the lake, mainly due to the amazing colour and clarity of the water which is dazzling.

As we drew closer we could see that the water was teeming with trout and the children were excited to try and spot the biggest. We followed the path around the lake which took us wonderfully close to the waters edge and over a bridge in the middle. From the bridge it’s possible to see a statue submerged in the water and the story behind it shares a lovely poignant message about leaving sorrows behind us.

There is a hotel and restaurant on the banks of the lake and although it as relatively quiet when we arrived (10am), we could see tour buses arriving and I imagine it gets busy during the spring and summer months.

There is a play area for children and toilets, places to picnic and a sweet gift shop at the exit.

It’s a beautiful, romantic feast for the eyes and a must-see for anyone visiting Switzerland.
