After a day to recover from our huge car journey across France, we were ready to pick up our exploration of Switzerland today. We couldn’t face too much time on the road so we decided to go to visit the Nest museum in Vevey.
I’m rather ashamed to say that I had never heard of the place but the website sounded interesting so we were excited to see for ourselves. For anyone else who is unfamiliar with it, Nest is a museum created by Nestlé giving an insight into their history and development.
There’s a lot of road works in Vevey at the moment so the sat nav got us a bit lost but we found our way to the NEST car park which is nice and spacious. As a bit of free entertainment we (mainly Jean) spent a few minutes shouting to enjoy the wonderful acoustic effects in the car park ;-)).
The entrance to the building is a short walk from the car park. It’s a huge modern, airy space and we were immediately impressed with the design of the reception area. We paid chf27 for two adults (children under 6 are free) and were given handheld audio devices and earphones to follow the tour - we could choose which language we preferred and there was a special version for children.
We headed to the first part of the tour where the doors are opened every 5 minutes to control the amount of people in each room. We arrived at 10.15 and were the only ones in our batch following the tour which was brilliant! I won’t spoil it as part of the fun was discovering what lay beyond each door, but it was really a fantastically engrossing experience charting the early years of Nestlé, very interactive, amusing and interesting.
Following that, we headed to the second part of the tour which was freely accessible and explained more of the history of the company and their products bringing us up to modern day developments.
Upstairs is a children’s area call mini-fabrique where there children can put on construction hats and play at moving around, scanning and weighing soft boxes which kept Alba and Jude busy.
The whole tour took us about an hour including some dawdling and time spent at the play area. We took the double pushchair and the everywhere was easily accessible with lifts to the upper floors.
The toilets reminded me a bit of a smart hotel and were clean with a separate space for baby changing and disabled visitors. They have a beautiful looking café where they serve Sunday brunch but it was sadly full today. There is also a shop selling Nestlé products which was smartly laid out.
We got back to the car and realised we forgot to validate our parking ticket at the Nest reception which would have made it free but instead it was chf4 I think.
Definitely a good way to pass an hour, especially as the weather gets cooler.
