I first went to Montreux Christmas market in 2010 when I had newly moved to Geneva, the following year I went with Jean and since then we have been most years with the children and visiting family members.
It is always a beautiful experience and really marks the beginning of the Christmas season for us. We usually visit in the day but since we were heading to Rochers de Naye the following day, we decided to stay overnight in Montreux and visit in the evening when the children could enjoy the lights and the excitement of a night out.
They seem to have reorganised the layout a bit this year so there was much more space to move around the big wheel and the area down towards the Montreux Palace was much better laid out with a covered walkway lined with stalls. Jude was mesmerised by the lights of the big wheel and we stopped for he and Alba to have a ride on the merry-go-round. They also found a few nice plastic Santa’s to have their photographs taken with.
We are passionate foodies so one of the main attractions for us is discovering yummy new things to try alongside the classics. This year we opted for big bowls of piping hot tartiflette and wine while the children enjoyed some chestnuts, crepes and waffles (we’ll catch up on vegetables this week :-)).
It was relatively quiet when we went, perhaps because the market only started a few days before, and also because we went early evening between the day visitors and the nighttime traffic. The Montreux Christmas Market is located right beside the train station so the organisers recommend you come to Montreux by train. On weekdays, visitors can park their vehicles in one of the underground car parks in the city of Montreux but these get full quickly during the day so it’s a good idea to either leave early, take the train or park a little outside the town and get a shuttle bus in.
Before you leave, don't forget to pass by the The House of Wishes to send your wishes directly to Father Christmas.
For the children, the Place du Marché is entirely devoted to them with magic workshops, grilled sausages and Father Christmas flying on his sleigh.
