We visited one of the prettiest and largest Christmas markets in Switzerland at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz in the beautiful city of Basel.
This weekend we took a trip to celebrate my birthday and decided to do a little tour of the Christmas markets around Alsace. We based ourselves in Blotzheim near Basel and started with the Christmas market there the first night.
This has so far been our clear favourite market. We arrived about 6pm and managed to easily find parking in the Steinen multi-storey carpark.
From there is was a short walk to the first part of the Christmas market in Barfüsserplatz but we decided to head directly to the second part first which was another short walk away in Münsterplatz. We all fell in love with the charm of this place which was beautifully lit, well laid out and full of things to see.
In comparison to other Christmas markets, the stalls here were much more dynamic with lots of workshops where you can see people working as well as getting involved yourself. In passing we saw wooden decorations being made, as well as glass ornaments and there were places where children could forge metal (with help), decorate biscuits, make Christmas decorations and much more.
Jude took a turn on the little train which took him around the huts a couple of times so he was really excited about that. We had space to walk around peacefully with the double pushchair and found a nice spot to stop for a drink before walking back down to Barfüsserplatz.
This part felt more like the Christmas markets we are used to with rides for the children, and all the usual kinds of stalls. It was still very nice but it was getting busier as we arrived so we found something to eat before heading home.

Accessibility : Not ideal with a pushchair during the weekend when its busy. We would recommend a baby-carrier.

A word of advice: don’t use the toilets in Barfüsserplatz unless you absolutely have to - use the much nicer ones in Münsterplatz!!!
